Physiotherapy / Gym / Wayne
Referrers: Treating GP (Ashmore Medical) and Neurosurgeon
Program requested: Physiotherapy water-exercise program (aquatic therapy),
progressing to land-based gym program
Start with Wayne: January–February (approx.)
Background & Referral Pathway
- Both my GP and my neurosurgeon requested that I commence a physiotherapy water-exercise program.
- The public hospital booked me in, but the wait time was ~7–8 weeks for a first appointment.
- With a new referral from my GP at Ashmore Medical, I was able to transition to another clinic, where Wayne was assigned to my case.
Initial Contact & Aquatic Therapy
- Around January–February,
- Wayne contacted me, explained he had been assigned to my case, and confirmed he was there to
- support water-based physiotherapy as recommended by my treating doctor.
- He scheduled sessions at a pool and coached me on movement in water—
- reduced gravity to allow motion with less load and less fear.
- From the first phone call to the first in-person session, Wayne was genuinely helpful.
- I initially had a mindset of “I can’t / I don’t think I can,”
- But wayne guided me through the pain,
- gave extra time after each session to explain what we were doing, and pre-warned me
- how to meet and move through discomfort safely.
- Wayne works on both the physical and mental sides:
- Wayne talks you through,
- helps you achieve what you came for,
- Never pushes to a point you dread returning,
- Wayne keeps sessions challenging but doable.
- Listening to Wayne’s advice—
- “no weight, less gravity, just walk in the pool”—
- shifted my thinking from “I can’t” to “let’s try.”
- Because of Wayne and his approach,
- I looked forward to sessions and felt progress despite pain.
Progression to Land-Based Program
- Wayne explained we were on a time limit
- (in relation to my broader care and surgical waitlist).
- To progress appropriately,
- we needed to move from water to land.
- He transitioned me to a
- slow, carefully introduced gym program,
- staying with me during sessions,
- talking me through each step, and debriefing afterward.
- He provided home exercise plans and set suitable times
- for the following week’s treatment so I could stay consistent between appointments.
Clinical Approach & Personal Care
- Wayne’s care shows he works not only within a paid service but also as a
- supportive guide and, frankly, a friend in the process.
- He genuinely cares about safety and understanding:
- Explains why we train this way,
- What each exercise does,
- How it benefits my specific injury, and
- Why to continue it at home or at the gym.
- He is a strong one-on-one clinician:
- if I struggle,
- he adjusts immediately
- (e.g., lowering weight, changing seat position, better support).
- Throughout sessions,
- he never takes his eyes off me;
- if I lose balance or grip,
- he catches it instantly.
- This vigilance has been exceptional.
Professionalism & Comparison
- Compared with a private gym instructor
- I used years before the injury,
- Wayne’s standard of care is
- not comparable—he is outstanding.
- He should be recognized for both his knowledge and workplace performance—
- how he applies what he knows,
- how he communicates, and how
- he supports recovery.
Outcome to Date
- With Wayne’s aquatic and land-based programs,
- I have made progress,
- built confidence, and learned safe ways to
- push through pain without flaring.
- His combined technical skill,
- clear communication, constant supervision,
- and human support have made a real difference.
Recommendation
- I highly recommend Wayne.
- He blends professional expertise with personal care, provides education,
- adapts to the minute, and keeps you safe—
- all while moving you towards your goals.
